Cleveland, OH – The Elmira College Men's Basketball team dropped an 82-70 non-conference tilt to Marygrove in the consolation game of the Stephanie Tubbs Memorial Tournament Saturday evening in Cleveland. The loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 0-3 overall, while the win improves the Mustangs to 3-2.
Neither team led by more than six points in a back-and-forth first half. The Purple and Gold got solid play from Kurt Dutcher '14 (Gaylord, MI -- Gaylord) as he contributed nine points in the opening stanza, with Elmira leading 36-32 at the break.
Despite holding the lead early in the second half the Mustangs went on a 19-11 run in an eight minute span to take a 61-50 lead with 8:47 remaining. EC got within seven after a conventional three point play by Derrick Vogel '14 (Bel Air, MD -- CM Wright), bringing Elmira within 63-56 at the seven minute mark. The Purple and Gold hung tough down the stretch but was unable to mount one more comeback to get within striking distance.
Josh Keys '14 (Bel Air, MD -- CM Wright) led Elmira in scoring as he had a productive game from the guard position, tallying 14 points and eight boards in 24 minutes. Dutcher added 12 points, while Vogel tallied 11 points and five assists. Omar Thomas led the Mustangs with a double-double finishing with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Marcus Hopkins notched a game-high 24 points, while Darryll Dixon added 16.
The Soaring Eagles held a 50-42 advantage on the glass and shot 35 percent from three-point range. However, Elmira only made 34 percent of its shots from the field, whereas Marygrove knocked down 40 percent of its field goal attempts.
Keys was named to the All-Tournament team for EC. In two games he combined for 27 points and 11 rebounds from the guard position. Elmira returns to action a week from today when they play Allegheny College, Saturday, at 6:00 p.m. in the first night of the University of Rochester tournament.
