Junior guard Travis Farrell (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) scored 14 points to lead four players in double figures as The University of Scranton men's basketball team beat SUNY-New Paltz, 93-59, in the championship game of the Radisson Invitational in the John Long Center on Saturday afternoon.
Farrell was named tournament most valuable player after shooting 8-for-9 from the field to lead the Royals to their second straight Radisson Invitational title. Senior guard Luke Hawk (Audubon, Pa./Methacton), an all-tournament selection, and freshman guard Ross Danzig (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights/Blair Academy-N.J.) added 14 points each, and senior forward Matt Swaback (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) had 12 points for the Royals. Danzig had five assists while Hawk added four.
Scranton (2-0) shot 50 percent (35-for-70) for the game while holding New Paltz (1-1) shot just 32.7 percent (16-for-49). The Royals also turned the ball over just seven times in the game, including none in the first half when they took a 47-34 advantage into the break.
Scranton dominated play in the middle, outscoring the Hawks in points in the paint, 54-16. The Royals also turned 19 New Paltz turnovers into 26 points.
Senior guard Harris Wichard (Merrick, N.Y./Bellmore JFK) earned all-tournament honors after leading New Paltz with 15 points, including 3-for-8 from 3-point range. Junior forward Matt Devine (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold Township) added 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Hawks.
Scranton returns to action Tuesday, November 22, when Misericordia comes to the Long Center for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
