The Buena Vista men's basketball team used a 28-9 run over the final 12 minutes on Saturday evening to top Beloit College, 80-62, and take third-place at the Wheaton College (Ill.) Lee Pfund Classic.
Senior Jeff Janssen (Fairmont, Minn./Fairmont) matched a career-high with 20 points to lead all scorers, while drilling a season-best four three-pointers. Junior Wes Nordquist followed with 16 points and eight rebounds, while senior Doug Bissen (Earling, Iowa/Harlan) turned in 11 points, while connecting on 5-of-6 from the floor.
Senior Andy Puhrmann (Paullina, Iowa/South O'Brien), who lit it up with a career-best 29 points on Friday night, was held to only five on Saturday, but did dish out a game-high nine assists, to go along with five rebounds and three steals. Seniors Michael Elming (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) and Trent Fisher (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) each added eight points, as did freshman Cole Darrow, as the Beavers, who are averaging 82.3 points per game early on this season, had all 10 players who saw the floor score in the contest, including six with at least eight.
The team, which is now shooting better than 50 percent from the field on the year, used another strong shooting effort at the start and kept it going throughout. The team shot 52 percent from the floor in the first half and led 38-35 at the break, while upping it to 54 percent in the second, as a jumper by Puhrmann gave BVU a 54-53 advantage with 12 minutes to go, and the team never looked back from there.
Defensively, the team held Beloit to just 8-of-29 shooting in the second half and just 34 percent for the game, while out-rebounding them 43-37.
Buena Vista improves to 1-2 overall this season and will return to action on Tuesday night, November 22, when it hosts Bethel University for a 7:30pm contest inside of Siebens Fieldhouse.
