Westminster (Pa.) Holds Off Visiting Oberlin in Season Opener

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College men's basketball team led the entire second half in Tuesday night's season opener against visiting Oberlin before the Titans hung on for a 72-69 victory. The Titans are now 1-0 and the Yeomen fall to 0-1.

After trailing by one at halftime, Westminster scored eight seconds into the second half and never trailed. Oberlin kept the margin to within eight points for the remainder of the game, including a 3-pointer with five seconds left that inched the deficit to 70-69, but junior guard Doug Smith drained a pair of free throws to ice the win.

Four Titans scored in double figures led by junior guard Ron Martino who came off the bench to score a career-high 18 points. Smith and junior guard Matt Shiner each bucketed 14 points and junior forward Adam Carswell posted his third career double-double with 11 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.

Charlie Crawford-Silva came off the bench and scored 16 points to lead Oberlin, while Josh Merritt and Jessee Neugarten each sank 12 points. Andrew Fox led the Yeomen with a game-high six assists and 23 rebounds to go with six points.

Oberlin outrebounded Westminster 57-37 but the Titans forced 24 Oberlin turnovers while committing 14.

Westminster will host the Buzz Ridl Classic Friday at 6 and 8 p.m. and Saturday at 2 and 4 p.m. The Titans play the second half of each doubleheader including Otterbein on Friday and Capital on Saturday. Thiel will play the early game each day against Capital and Otterbein, respectively.
