(Geneva, NY) – The Medaille College men's basketball team saw its hopes for an ECAC Tournament title come to an end this afternoon when host Hobart College upended them (94-76) in the Upstate Championship game. The Mavs received another command performance from senior Ricky Reed (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) who followed up his (27) point semifinal performance with (24) points in the final game of his illustrious career.
The first half was a nip and tuck affair with the Mavs carrying a razor thin (33-32) lead into halftime. However, the Statesmen would explode in the second half shooting (66.7%) from the floor and outscoring the Mavs (62-43) in the final frame. Hobart's bench was a big story as well, as they outscored the Maverick reserves (31-10).
Junior guard Angel Flores (Bronx, NY/Samuel Gompers) played well in the title game, finishing with (13) points, (4) rebounds and (3) assists. Reed's tremendous performance saw him knock down (7 of 15) shots, including (4) three point buckets. Forward Ron Malicki (Machias, NY/Pioneer) ended his tremendous career with a (17) point day. Fellow senior Joe Mogavero (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) also closed out his career with (10) points and a team high (7) boards.
The Mavs were looking to become the first Medaille team to ever win an ECAC Tournament Title, they are just the second to advance to a championship game (women's soccer 2009). The loss ends their season at (21-8). It is the third straight 20+ win season for the program. In last night's semifinal victory over Brockport State, head coach Mike MacDonald earned his 200th career victory.
