No. 6 R-MC Rallies for 62-59 Overtime Win in NCAA First-Round

ST. MARY'S , MD – No. 6 Randolph-Macon rallied from seven points with just over one minute to go in regulation to tie the game and win in overtime 62-59 over Alvernia in the First Round of the 2011 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament.

Trailing 51-44 with 1:12 to play, Eric Pugh got the rally started with a three pointer to pull R-MC within five  points. 

R-MC (25-4)  then forced an Alvernia turnover and capitalized on the other end when Danny Jones made the score 51-49 with 31 seconds left on the clock.

The Yellow Jackets fouled and put Alvernia on the line where it converted one –of-two shots.     Jones then connected on a three-pointer on the other end with five seconds remaining to send the game to overtime tied at 52-52.

The extra session featured three lead changes and four ties before Calvin Croskey stole the ball from Alvernia in its backcourt  and was able to set up Lamar Giggetts to put R-MC up for good at 61-59 with 48 seconds to play.

After R-MC converted one of two free-throws, Alvernia had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but its three-point shot fell short.  

Jones led R-MC with 14 points in the win.  Joining him in double digits was Pugh with 12 points, while Brandon Braxton and Croskey each had 11 for R-MC.  Jones paced and R-MC bench which held a 25-6 edge over Alvernia's subs.

Alvernia was led by Cory Boone with a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out. 

Randolph-Macon will face the winner of Medgar Evers and host St. Mary's on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
