ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - St. Mary's (Md.) used a 33-4 run in the first half to take a 97-65 final from Wesley in the championship game of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament.
The game started out promising for the Wolverines (17-9), who forced the Seahawks (22-5) to miss their first seven shots and built an early 7-0 lead.
But once St. Mary's got on the scoreboard, the Seahawks took control of the game. Wesley still led 16-14 after a jumper by Rudy Thomas (Milton, Del./Sussex Tech) with 10:18 to go in the half. But a three by Mike Fitzpatrick helped trigger the Seahawks back breaking run that resulted in a 47-20 halftime lead.
Thomas finished with 19 points for the Wolverines, who were playing for the conference title for the third consecutive year. Paul Reynolds (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) hit 7-of-10 field goals to end the day with 18 points.
Thomas and Reynolds combined to hit 11-of-20 field goals, but the rest of the Wolverines shot just 9-of-32 on the afternoon.
The Seahawks, meanwhile, rebounded from the icy start to hit 33-of-51 over the remainder of the contest and shot 57 percent in the game.
Sam Burum paced St. Mary's, who earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, with a game-high 20 points. Fitzpatrick and James Davenport had 13 apiece, while Alex Franz added a dozen.
Wesley was outrebounded in the game 39-24.
The Wolverines will await word on a potential postseason bid on Monday, February 27.
