A 10-0 first half and 13-1 second half Redlands runs were all it took to hand the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen a 68-58 defeat in the SCIAC Post-Season Semi-Finals Friday evening.
Box Score: UR 68, CLU 58 - F
Competing in his final game as a Kingsman, senior Greg Grimm led all scorers with 18 points. Jayvaughn Nettles added 12 points to his team's cause with teammates Aaron Van Klaveren and Jeremy Sulker-Hall each finishing with 10 points.
It was the SCIAC's hottest team versus the regular season champions when the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen traveled to Currier Gym to face the Redlands Bulldogs Friday evening.
Earning a spot in the conference semi-finals by winning their last four consecutive games, CLU was able to quickly quiet the partisan crowd when they scored the first basket of the game to take an early three-point lead.
Unfortunately for CLU, Redlands was able to score the next 10 straight points to re-energize those in attendance and take a 10-3 lead.
From that point on, the Kingsmen were able to maintain their poise and trade baskets with the Bulldogs, connecting on 36% of their shots from the field and almost half of their attempts from behind the three-point arc to trail Redlands by only eight points at the half.
Both Van Klaveren and Nettles led the team after 20 minutes of action with six points apiece, with Sulker-Hall contributing four points of his own to help his team's cause.
As a testament to the quality of basketball that was being played in Redlands, even though each team were physical against one another on defense, only four free throws were taken by each team throughout the first half.
Both Nettles and Steven Davis came up huge on the CLU defensive end at various points of the first half as each were able to come up with timely blocked shots that fully taken advantage of by the Kingsmen on the other end of the floor.
In addition to his six first half points, Van Klaveren muscled his way around the paint at-will whenever Redlands was on offense, grabbing six of his team's 14 boards during the first 20 minute session.
Down by as much as 21 points in the second half, CLU battled back to cut the Bulldog lead in half, trailing at one point by 10 points.
But the two Redlands scoring runs would eventually take its toll on Cal Lutheran as they could not erase the deficit that stared at them for a majority of the game.
Even though the Kingsmen shot an impressive 48% in the second half going 11-23 from the field, Redlands was able to come up with the points needed to end any and every Cal Lutheran scoring run, with the game clock stopping the most furious CLU comeback effort once the scoreboard reached 00:00.
Cal Lutheran finishes the 2010-11 season with a 14-12 overall record, going 8-6 in SCIAC competition.
