JACKSON, Miss. (Feb. 25) -- Centre College's Greg Ross scored an SCAC tournament single-game record 38 points on 11-for-19 shooting and added 11 rebounds in leading the East's No. 1 seed to a 54-46 win over No. 4 West seed Hendrix College Friday evening at Heidelberg Gymnasium.
Ross broke previous record holder Jon Query's mark of 34 points. Query of Rose-Hulman scored 34 points against Southwestern in a quarterfinal loss back on Feb. 27, 2003.
The Colonels, (19-5, 13-3 SCAC), were held to under 40 pecent shooting (18-of-49) but rode Ross' record night to the win. No other Centre player scored more than six points as Ross accounted for 70 percent of Centre's scoring. Senior Alex Lloyd helped add to the Colonels' 50-25 rebound margin by tallying 10 rebounds.
Hendrix was led by junior Ammon Martin's 18 points on 7-of-16 shooting. He also added four rebounds. Senior James Ewing and first year Colton Primm both added seven points for the Warriors (10-16, 5-11 SCAC).
Centre jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead early in the first half before taking a 25-14 lead into the locker room . Hendrix took its first lead afer coming back from a 26-15 deficit. The Warriors put a 17-2 run together midway through the second half to take a 32-28 lead. The Colonels then responded and closed out the game with a 26-14 run.
Centre advances to the SCAC semifinals on Saturday, February 26 where they await the winner of the No. 2 West Colorado College vs. No. 3 East Oglethorpe University match up. The Colonels will make its seventh consecutive appearance in the SCAC semifinals and the program's eighth semifinal appearance since 2003.
