Johnson & Wales Men's Basketball Defeats Suffolk 96-63 In GNAC Quarterfinals

Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University men's basketball team posted a dominating 96-63 victory against Suffolk in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship at the Harborside Center on Tuesday evening.

Johnson & Wales was led by junior Lamonte Thomas (Providence, R.I.) with a game-high 33 points, eight boards and four assists while junior Calvin Jones (Providence, R.I.) had 16 points, six rebounds and three assists in the victory.   Senior Louis Ferras and junior James Folk (Salem, N.H.) each had 13 points while senior Darren Faust (Queens, N.Y.) rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points in the victory. 

Suffolk was paced by sophomore Colin Halpin (Melrose, Mass.) with 18 points and eight boards while sophomore Matt Pepdjonovic (Quincy, Mass.) narrowly missed a double-double with 13 points and nine boards in the loss for the Rams.

Johnson & Wales got out of the gates fast and took their first double-figure lead when a layup by Thomas put the squad up 26-16 with 8:50 left in the first half.  The Wildcats would take the 45-30 lead into the locker room at halftime

It was more of the same in the second half as the Wildcats continued to build on their lead while cruising to the 96-63 victory.  JWU shot 53.7% from the field, including a remarkable 55.6% (10-of-18) from behind the three point stripe.  The Wildcats also had a 41-28 advantage on the boards and forced Suffolk into 19 turnovers.

With the win Johnson & Wales is now 18-8 overall while Suffolk falls to 8-18 for the season.  The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, February 24th when they host Albertus Magnus in the GNAC semifinals, starting at 7:00 p.m.
