Balanced Attack Leads Devils Past Swarthmore in CC Opener

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College men's basketball team used an overall team effort to open the Centennial Conference season with a 74-61 win over Swarthmore College on Tuesday night. The Devils used a balanced attack to improve to 2-2 overall while the Garnet slips to 3-2.

 

The Red Devils held an early advantage, pulling in front by five with 14:11 to play in the first half. Swarthmore bounced back to take a three-point lead before the Devils countered to hold a 34-31 edge at the break.

 

The Devils quickly went to work to open the second half, stretching the margin to 10 in the first two minutes on the way to a 51-36 advantage with 13:28 remaining in regulation. The Devils would build the lead to as many as 18 in the late minutes as they got hot from beyond the arc, hitting five three-pointers in the second half.

 

Sophomore Will Gates led Swarthmore with a game-high 30 points, hitting 6-of-7 three-pointers and 6-of-6 free throws.

 

First-year Brian Gerney (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) led the Devils with 17 points, hitting 6-of-8 field-goals, adding a pair of three-pointers. Classmate Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) added 14 points while recording three steals and a pair of assists. Honig was perfect from the line at 5-for-5.

 

Sophomore Logan Furr (Sharon, Mass./Beaver Country Day) came off the bench to score 11 points, hitting a trio of three-pointers. Junior Chris Heine (Spring Lake, N.J./St. Rose) added nine points while senior Matt Dolan (Chalfont, Pa./St. Joe's Prep) recorded a game-high 12 rebounds.

 

Senior Pat Kearns (Hartford, Conn./East Catholic) went 6-for-6 from the free throw line as the Devils shot 22-for-25 as a team on the night.

 

The Red Devils travel to Juniata College on Monday night and then to McDaniel College on Wednesday.
