Host Bears Hold Off Devils 82-77

(Collegeville, Pa.) – The Dickinson College men's basketball team made a run at host Ursinus, but could not pull in front, falling 82-77 on Saturday afternoon.

 

Matt Hilton led the way for Ursinus with a game-high 26 points, hitting 6-of-10 field-goals, 4-of-6 three-pointers and all 10 free throw attempts. Senior forward Matt Dolan (Chalfont, Pa./St. Joe's Prep) put up some big numbers as well, scoring 25 points, hitting 8-of-12 field-goals and 9-of-10 free throws while dishing out four assists.

 

The Bears jumped out to 10-5 lead before the Devils answered to knot the game at 10 with 12:34 remaining in the half. The Bears broke a 17-17 tie with a 15-5 run to pull in front 32-22 with 4:08 on the clock. The Bears built their biggest lead of the game to 14 before first-year Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) knocked-down a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 43-32 at the break.

 

The Bears held a double-digit lead for most of the second half, but the Red Devils remained in striking distance for the entire half as well. Ursinus stretched the lead to 57-41 with 14:33 remaining in the game. The Devils continued to chip away at the lead, cutting the margin to seven at the 10:44 mark and pulling within six with 7:24 to play.

 

Following a brief free throw shooting contest, the Devils found themselves down just a field-goal, 78-75, with 1:05 remaining in regulation. The Bears would hold on, hitting four free throws in the final 20 seconds to secure the win.

 

Jon Ward had a big night for the Bears (8-11, 5-7) as well, scoring 19 points behind a 11-of-13 performance from the charity stripe.

 

Sophomore Chris Barsanti (Hummelstown, Pa./Tilton School) reached double-figures as well, scoring 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting. Brian Gerney (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) and Honig each scored 11 points as well on the night. Gerney added four assists and four steals while Honig added two steals as well.

 

The Red Devils slip to 9-10 overall and 7-5 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to face McDaniel College on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for approximately 8:00 pm.
