More news about: UW-Whitewater
UW-Whitewater stayed in the hunt for the third seed in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, defeating UW-Oshkosh 73-62 at Kachel Gym in Williams Center Wednesday night.

Whitewater, Platteville and La Crosse entered Wednesday's play tied for third place in the WIAC with 8-6 records.  Whitewater improved to 9-6 with the win, as did La Crosse with a win at River Falls.  Platteville fell a game behind with a loss at Stevens Point.  Whitewater is 16-8 overall.

Junior center Chris Davis scored ten of Whitewater's first 12 points on the way to a 12-8 lead for the Warhawks at 16:03.  Over the next four plus minutes Oshkosh out-scored UW-W 9-4 to make it 17-16 Titans at the 11:53 mark.  UW-W came back to grab the lead with 5:02 on the clock, 33-31. With the scored tied, 34-34, Whitewater closed the half 6-0 to go in to the lockerroom leading 40-34.

Whitewater shot 55% in the half and made six more field goals than the Titans, who shot 41%.  Davis piled up 22 points on 10-14 shooting to lead all scorers, and sophomore guard Antone Byrd added 11 points.  None of the Titans were in double figures at the break.

Second half, ditto.  Davis accounted for eight of Whitewater's first ten points (and also blocked two shots in that span) for a 50-42 lead at 16:54.  Neither team could mount a run the rest of the way, with Oshkosh closing within 53-49 at 10:06 on a three by junior guard Greg Schrimpf.  Whitewater managed a momentary twelve point bulge with 3:09 left, 66-54.

Whitewater shot 50% from the field while limiting the Titans to 37%.

Davis racked up a double double, scoring 35 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.  The 35 points is the most since Myles McKay scored the same number against UW-Stevens Point February 14, 2009.  Byrd added 19 and a game high four assists.  Davis added three blocked shots and three steals to his line.  The Titans were led by sophomore forward Paul Wojahn's 13 points.  Sophomore forward T.J. Kellner led both teams with four steals.

UW-W will close the regular season at home, hosting UW-Superior Saturday, February 19 at 1:00.  The WIAC tournament will begin Tuesday, February 22 at 7:00.  The top two teams in the championship season earn a bye, with number three hosting number six, and number four hosting number five.  Tuesday's first round winners will play at the number one and number two seeds home courts.
