Second-half run lifts Tommies to big victory

The 11th-ranked Tommies (21-3 overall, 16-3 MIAC) locked up a first-round playoff bye and improved to 11-1 at home this season as they put five players scoring in double figures in Wednesday night's 82-60 win over third-place Hamline (15-9, 13-6).  

Alex Healy scored 19 points to lead UST. Tommy Hannon had 10 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and three steals. Tyler Nicolai added 12 points and five rebounds, and John Nance had 10  points off the bench.

The Tommies had a 45-25 rebounding adavantage, had only eight turnovers and shot 49 percent from the floor.

The Pipers had a six-game winning streak halted. Carl Hipp had 15 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks for HU, which had 17 turnovers and was outscored 33-15 over the final 15:00.

UST led 41-33 at halftime. The Pipers closed to within 49-46 with 15:00 to play but the Toms used a 15-4 run with baskets from six different players to build the lead to 64-50 with 9:01 remaining.  

St. Thomas is still tied with Carleton with one game to go as it attempts to  become the first MIAC men's hoops team in 55 seasons to win or share six consecutive conference championships. UST plays Saturday at St. John's and Carleton is home to play rival St. Olaf.
