ATLANTA -- Emory University's Austin Claunch scored a game-high 26 points, including the go-ahead basket in overtime, as the host Eagles defeated the University of Chicago 91-87 in University Athletic Association men's basketball action Sunday afternoon.
Claunch's basket with 1:07 left in the extra period broke an 84-84 deadlock. He then made two free throws with :19 to go and added two more with :09 remaining to seal the win for Emory (18-4 overall, 9-2 UAA).
Emory held a double-digit advantage for the final 15 minutes of the first half and led 40-24 at the intermission. The Eagles took their largest lead of the game, 51-34, when Alex Greven hit one of two free throw attempts with 15:47 remaining in the contest.
Chase Davis then scored 14 points over the next seven minutes as Chicago (8-14, 5-6) outscored Emory 27-8 to take its first lead since early in the game, 61-59, at the 8:36 mark.
Emory reclaimed the advantage, 72-71, with 4:16 to go on a Julien Williams jumper, but Chicago evened the score at 76-76 on Matt Johnson's three-point basket with 1:43 left.
Both teams had a chance to win late in regulation, but an Emory turnover and a Chicago missed three-pointer in the final :07 sent the game into overtime.
Steve Stefanou's basket midway through the overtime gave the Maroons their last lead of the day, 84-83. Williams tied the game with a free throw 26 seconds later.
The teams made a combined 84 trips to the foul line. Chicago was 36-for-42, while Emory connected on 33 of 42 tries. Johnson hit 15 of 16 attempts, while Davis (pictured) was successful on 10 of 11.
Johnson paced the Maroons with 20 points. Davis finished with a career-high 19, and Stefanou added 13.
Williams totaled 19 points and 13 rebounds for the Eagles. Greven and Michael Friedberg tallied 15 and 10 points, respectively.
Entering the game as the most prolific three-point shooting team in the UAA with 9.0 per game, Chicago made just three of 16 attempts on the day.
Sunday's game marked the Maroons' second overtime contest of the season. Back on Jan. 28, Chicago defeated Case Western Reserve University 71-66 at the Ratner Center.
