(Buffalo, NY) – The Medaille College men's basketball team found itself in a tight game in the opening thirteen minutes of play against visiting Penn State-Altoona on "Senior Day" in the Sullivan Center. However, an explosive dunk in transition from 5′9″ senior guard Ricky Reed (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) who was fouled on the play and then knocked down the ensuing free throw gave the Mavs a six point lead and energized the team and the fans. From that point on the Mavs dominated en route to a (97-65) victory.
It was a dominant performance from the Mavs as they controlled nearly every phase of the game. They shot (55.9%) from the field and (54.5%) from three point land. The Maverick bench outscored their counterparts (56-14) and all sixteen players that saw action for Medaille scored at least two points. The Mavs outrebounded the Lions (41-33), assisted on (26) of their buckets and blocked (7) Altoona shots.
Senior Ron Malicki (Machias, NY/Pioneer) made the most of his final regular season home game by tallying a game high (19) points on (7 of 9) shooting from the floor. He also grabbed (5) rebounds and blocked (3) shots. Reed finished with (9) points, (8) rebounds and (5) assists while not committing a single turnover. Fellow senior Joe Mogavero (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) posted (8) points, (9) boards and a pair of blocked shots.
Two sophomore's came off the bench with big contributions as Tyler Stevens (Depew, NY/Depew) was (4 for 4) on the day with all four shots coming from behind the three point arc, he finished with (12) points. Matching that same feat was Anthony Battaglia (Lancaster, NY/Depew) who was Tyler's high school teammate. One of Battaglia's three pointers came on a fast break when he pulled up in transition and knocked it down to keep the Maverick momentum surging.
The win is the Mavericks 9th straight and it pushes their record to (18-5) while they stay in the hunt for a third consecutive AMCC title with a (14-2) conference mark. The Mavs will head across town on Wednesday (2/16) when they will face D'Youville College at 8:00pm.
