Men Done in By Buzzer-Beater Yet Again

More news about: Lehman

The year on the schedule might say 2010-11, but to Coach Steve Schulman and his Lightning team it sure seemed like 2009-10 all over again versus visiting Mount Saint Vincent Monday night at the Apex Center.

That's because in losing to the Dolphins 70-68 in the season opener, the Lightning once again fell victim to a heart-wrenching buzzer-beater. This time it came at the hands of the Mount's George Naldjieff, who tipped in a missed runner by Alvin Pegues with no time remaining to send the Dolphins rooting section into delirium and leave his teammates to chase him around the court in celebration.

For the Lightning it was a cruel way to lose, especially after the seesaw nature of the second half that featured seven lead changes and two ties over the final 8:26 of the game.

It was at that point that Lehman seemed to have momentum on its side after a three possession sequence that had the home crowd buzzing with excitement.

Trailing 55-51 following a layup by Ratique Young with 9:20 left to play, Lehman flexed its interior muscle in the person of Chukwuma Ndukwe. The 6-5 junior from Nigeria blocked Pegues' layup attempt, leading to a three-pointer by newcomer Samuel Batista on the other end to pull Lehman to 55-54. On Mount Saint Vincent's ensuing possession, Ndukwe made his presence felt yet again, denying another layup attempt by Pegues, which resulted in a fastbreak layup for Young and a 56-55 lead for Lehman. Not wanting to seem one dimensional, Ndukwe dropped in a jump hook in the lane on Lehman's next possession to boost the lead to 58-55.

Omonya Onwe followed with back to back baskets to give the Dolphins the 59-58 lead. But offensive rebounds by Quaseem Weems, Jonathan DeJesus and Ratique Young kept alive a possession that ended in Weems finally dropping in a layup to return the lead to the Lightning at 60-59 with 5:15 to go.

After Pegues got a layup to fall, freshman Daniel Rock, who started at point guard for the Lightning, knocked down a huge triple from the left corner that gave Lehman the temporary lead at 63-61. A Weems' basket following a free throw by Pegues pushed the Lightning margin to 65-62 before layups on back to back possessions by Cody Gauvard and Onwe put the Dolphins in front 66-65. Young's free throw for the Lightning knotted the game at 66-66.

Tied with 39 seconds to play, George Nimmons turned the ball over after being trapped in the backcourt, which led to a layup for Chris Bonaventura and a 68-66 advantage for Mount. Redeeming himself immediately, however, Nimmons converted a driving layup with five seconds to play that looked like it would send the game into overtime. But with the Dolphins inbounding quickly amidst the emotion pulsing through the gym, Pegues pushed upcourt and got off a runner in the lane that bounced high off the rim before Naldjieff came flying out of nowhere to tip the game-winner home.

In the loss, Lehman's Batista impressed in his debut, notching a double-double as the game's high scorer and rebounder with 17 and 13 respectively. Also posting a double-double for the Lightning was junior Jonathan DeJesus with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Lehman will have the rest of the week to regroup before departing for Clinton, New York on Friday where they will partake in the Hamilton College Tournament this weekend.
