Lightning Men on Losing End of Overtime Battle

More news about: Lehman

A breakout 31-point performance by newcomer Victor Garcia combined with a 15-point second half rally to force overtime was not enough for Lehman to earn a victory as the visiting Lightning fell to Stevenson University 95-89 on Monday afternoon.

Garcia was on his game from the outset, displaying a combination of drives to the basket and fluid outside shooting, totaling 14 early points to help key a hot shooting first half overall for the Lightning (50 percent). The Lightning's proficiency from the floor kept the game close through the first 15 minutes as Lehman and Stevenson were tied at 37. But the Mustangs closed the half on a 14-2 run with 10 points coming from sophomore Brett Burrier (20 first half points) to take a 51-39 lead into the locker room.

Stevenson continued to build on its lead out of the half, extending to a 62-47 bulge with 13:41 remaining. The Lightning would methodically fight back, however, behind contributions from just about everyone on the floor. Garcia was again superb, matching his opening half output with 14 second half points, while Jonathan DeJesus tallied 11 points down the stretch including the game-tying free throw with 27 seconds remaining. The Mustangs had two chances to snatch the game away in regulation, but Greg Woody and Burrier both missed in the closing seconds to send the game to overtime.

Things started well for the Lightning in the extra session as Lehman built a quick four point lead behind baskets by Samuel Batista and DeJesus. Stevenson regained the lead with 1:53 remaining on Stefon McCray's two free throws before Woody converted a huge three-pointer to push the Mustangs' small cushion to 91-87. A three-pointer by Garcia brought the Lightning back to within a basket at 91-88 with 12 seconds remaining, but Lehman would get no closer before the final buzzer.

Aside from Garcia's stellar effort, DeJesus was equally up to the task, recording a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds. Batista contributed 17 points in the loss as well. Stevenson was led by Burrier and Woody who finished with 29 and 26 points respectively.

Lehman is right back on the horse on Tuesday traveling to Goucher College for a 7:30 p.m. slate.
