Fast start sends Carlleton past No. 9 Tommies

Jeremy Sutherland scored a game-best 18 points and led a 13-0 run to close the first half in Wednesday's 67-61 Knights' win over the visiting Tommies in MIAC men's basketball play in Northfield.

Carleton (14-7 overall, 13-3 MIAC) moved into a share of the conference lead with the No. 9 Tommies (18-3, 13-3). Carleton won its 16th home game in a row dating back to last season.

The game was tied 29-29 with 3:00 left in the first half but the Knights scored 13 points in a row capped by Sutherland's 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer. The Knights shot 56% from the floor in the first half.

Carleton led by as much as 18 points before UST whittled the lead to four points on two occasions in the final 5:30.

Alex Healy scored 13 points and Brady Ervin had 12 points and seven rebounds. The Toms were outscored 18-9 from 3-point range and 15-8 at the foul line but managed a 40-31 rebounding advantage.

Carleton got 62 points from its starters to offset the Toms' 27-5 advantage in bench points. Caleb Rosenow had 16 points and Seth Jonker had 12 points and nine rebounds.

Both teams have four games left in the regular season. UST plays Saturday at Gustavus (3 p.m.) and returns home next Monday to play Concordia-Moorhead.
