Hutton connects from long distance, Britons win

ADRIAN, Mich. – Albion College is not unbeatable when Chris Hutton shoots at least 50 percent from 3-point range. The Britons have to like their chances of winning when it happens.

Hutton knocked down 6-of-8 attempts from behind the arc – and finished with a career-high 26 points – to lift Albion to a 66-57 victory over Adrian College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association contest at the Merillat Center. The Britons are now 7-2 when Hutton makes at least half his shots from long distance.

Hutton scored 11 points as Albion took control of a game that was tied at 18 with 8:48 left in the first half. He knocked down a jumper, a fastbreak layup, and a pair of 3-point goals to propel Albion to a 28-20 lead with 3:43 on the clock.

"Chris was taking good shots and he got on a roll," Albion coach Jody May said. "Adrian typically plays good defense, but we came out aggressive right away. We were sharing the ball and making the extra pass."

Kyle McDonald added a free throw and Kolin Kazen a layup as Albion took a 31-22 lead to the locker room at halftime.

Wesley Reed scored nine of his 14 points to trim the margin to five with 14 minutes left. The Bulldogs also pulled to within five, 44-39, on Mitch Gabriele's fastbreak layup with 11 ½ minutes remaining. That was as close as Adrian would get as it came away empty on its two possessions following Gabriele's layup.

Albion reestablished a double-digit lead as Mike Smith turned in an old-fashioned 3-point play and Anthony Wash produced his only 3-point goal of the night.

Albion's 47 percent shooting from 3-point range was its third-best performance of the season. Kazen, who was 2-of-4 from 3-point range, finished with 13 points. Smith, who was 5-of-6 from the field, posted a career-high 11 points.

"It helped that our guys were able to find Mike underneath," May said. "He plays with a lot of energy."

Sean Gallant led Adrian with 17 points.

Albion (12-9 overall, 6-4 MIAA) moved into a three-way tie for second place in the league with two weeks remaining in the season. The Britons complete a three-game road swing Feb. 9 at Trine University.
