Pittsburgh, Pa., February 4, 2011 — Junior Dylan Richter scored 22 of his team-high 24 points in the first half but it was not enough as the Washington University men's basketball team dropped a 78-65 decision at Carnegie Mellon University in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Friday night at Skibo Gymnasium in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Washington U. led 56-51 with 9:18 remaining, but a 10-0 run by Carnegie Mellon gave the Tartans the lead for good. The Bears connected on just 4-of-14 from the field in the final nine minutes of play as they saw their season-long four-game winning streak come to an end.

Richter was 9-of-15 from the field for the game, including 6-of-12 from three-point range. He was held to two points in the second half on 1-of-5 shooting. Senior Spencer Gay (10 points) and sophomore Ben Hoeneralso scored in double figures for the Bears, which shot 44.3 percent (27-61) from the field and 33.3 percent (7-21) from the three-point range.

CMU's Shane Rife was the story early on in the contest, as he scored the first 15 points of the game for the Tartans. Rife connected on his third three-pointer of the game from the wing to make it 13-10, and then his fast-break lay-up pushed the advantage to 15-12 with 11:21 left.

Not to be outdone, Richter scored nine points in a span of 1:31 giving Washington U. its largest lead of the first half at 29-23 with 6:04 remaining. Richter hit three-pointers on three-consecutive possessions for the Bears: a step-back three, a three-pointer from 25-feet out and a three off a screen at the top of the key.

Richter was not done yet, though, as he drilled two more three's before the half and finished the opening 20 minutes of play with 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including 6-of-8 from three-point range. Richter scored the Bears last 15 points of the first half.

Carnegie Mellon (6-12, 3-5 UAA) took a 38-35 lead to the locker room behind 22 points from Rife. The Tartans hit 7-of-13 shots from three-point range in the first half, while the Bears connected on 6-of-11.

The Tartans scored the first bucket of the second half, but a 7-0 run by the Bears gave Washington U. a 42-40 lead before a Carnegie Mellon timeout. With the score tied at 51-51, Gay scored on a lay-up and then senior Caleb Knepper hit a free-throw and then got the rebound on the second and put it back in to make it 56-51.

Rife led all scorers with 26 points, while Rashaun Riley (13 points), Christian Manoli (10 points) and Matthew Pettit (10 points) also scored in double figures. The Tartans connected on 11-of-22 (50 percent) three-pointers and 13-of-16 (81.3 percent) free-throws.

Washington University (10-9, 4-4 UAA) returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 6, at Case Western Reserve University. Tip-off is set for Noon (ET) at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio.
