La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team earned an 81-65 victory over UW-Whitewater Thursday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles improve to 11-10 overall and 6-6 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference while the Warhawks fall to 13-7 overall and 6-5 in the conference. UW-L snapped a seven-game losing streak to UW-Whitewater with the win Thursday night.
The Eagles never trailed in the game, racing out to a 14-0 lead as the Warhawks missed their first seven shots from the field. UW-L later led 28-8 with 10:20 remaining in the first half after a three-pointer by Tony Mane. The Eagles led by as many as 22 points at 35-13 before UW-Whitewater cut the lead to 43-27 at halftime.
UW-Whitewater cut the lead to 10 points four different times in the second half, including 60-50 with 8:40 left. UW-L went on a 10-2 run to lead 70-52 with 5:26 remaining and UW-Whitewater could get no closer than 14 points the rest of the game.
Mane led UW-L with 35 points, finishing 12-of-22 from the field, including seven-of-10 from three-point range. Al Chery finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals while Jordan Rumpel added 12 points. Cory Degner finished with nine points.
UW-L shot a season-high 58.2% from the field, including 56.3% (nine-of-16) from three-point range. The Eagles shot 66.7% (eight-of-12) at the free throw line.
Chris Davis led UW-Whitewater with 21 points and 11 rebounds. DJ Dantzler added 11 points.
The Warhawks shot 39.7% from the field, including 16.7% (four-of-24) from three-point range, and 93.8% (15-of-16) at the line.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, February 5 at UW-Superior starting at 3:05 p.m.
