FROSTBURG, Md.--The Hood College men's basketball team (10-10, 6-6 CAC) dropped a 71-65 Capital Athletic Conference decision to the Frostburg State University Bobcats (9-12, 4-8 CAC) Wednesday evening.
Despite falling for the third straight time on the road to a CAC opponent, the Blazers remain in fifth place in the CAC, two games ahead of the sixth-place Bobcats. Junior Brenden Straughn and first-year Cameron Cook both eclipsed the 20-point plateau for the Blazers. Straughn connected on 6-of-12 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the line for 21 points while Cook knocked down four long-range buckets and finished with 20 points in the setback. After six lead changes and four ties in the opening stanza, the Bobcats outscored the Blazers 11-3 over the final 4:14 of the period, limiting the Blazers to just a Cook trey in that span. Frostburg led 35-27 at intermission. Frostburg mounted an 11-point advantage in the opening minutes of the second half before the Blazers used an 8-0 run to draw within one possession, 45-42, at the 12:51 mark. Hood would not allow the deficit to grow to more than six and eventually regained the lead at the 5:31 mark on another bucket by Cook which made it 54-53 Hood. A pair of free throws by Straughn gave Hood a 56-53 lead, but from that point the Blazers went scoreless for 3:17 and turned the ball over three times, allowing the Bobcats to snag a 62-56 lead with 1:29 remaining in regulation. Hood was unable to come up with a stop on the defensive end, as the Bobcats connected on 6-of-7 from the line down the stretch and DeSean Antoine converted a pair of layups to clinch the six-point win for the hosts. Reco Siler dished a team-high five assists and became the eighth Blazer in program history to record 100 career helpers. He now has 104 assists in just two seasons in the blue-and-grey. The Blazers outrebounded FSU, 36-25, and shot 50 percent from the field in the second half, but came up just short of the victory. Antoine paced the Bobcats with 19 points, leading three players in double figures. Hood returns to the Odom Fitness Center Saturday to host the ninth-place Stevenson University Mustangs at 6 p.m. The Blazers will recognize seniors Reco Siler and Tyler Snoots, as well as former Blazer and current assistant coach Ryan Junghans '09, prior to the contest. |
