Reading, Pa. (Dec. 4, 2010) - Alvernia University (5-1, 2-0) turned in its second straight solid defensive effort and never trailed in a 60-51 win over Lebanon Valley College (4-3, 0-2) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference men's basketball action at the Physical Education Center.

Senior Seth Cornell (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) led the Crusaders with 17 points and Charles Swiggett (Chester, Pa./Chester) reached double digits with 15.  The Alvernia defense held all five LVC starters under 10 points each and only reserve Cameron Prince reached double figures with 14.

Swiggett opened the game with a pair of free throws and freshman Chris Davis (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) followed with a 3.  Despite the early success, Alvernia continued to struggle from long range hitting just 3-of-16 attempts from beyond the arc.  That on the heels of a 1-for-13 effort in a win at Albright on Wednesday.  On the bright side, the defense has made it equally as difficult for opponents to hit from long range with the last two hitting a combined 5-of-34.

Alvernia's first half lead on Saturday grew to as many as eight points on a layup from Brian Parker (Chichester, Pa./Chichester) and was at seven points, 28-21 at the halftime break.  Alvernia held LVC to 33 percent from the floor including 2-for-7 from the arc over the first 20 minutes.

Swiggett scored six straight points to open the second half and Brian Nerney (Middletown, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) made it eight straight and a 36-21 lead with a layup.

LVC cut that to seven points on two occasions, but Alvernia responded to the second with a 12-4 run that built the lead to 15 points with under two minutes to play.

Alvernia is off for finals week and returns to action on the 15th hosting Kean University for a non-conference game.
