Crusaders Cruise Into Tip-Off Championship

Reading, Pa. (Nov. 19, 2010) - Alvernia University (2-0) held Penn State-Berks (0-2) to 19 second-half points in an 88-52 win in game two of the Alvernia Men's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament Friday evening at the Physical Education Center.  The Crusaders will face DeSales University in Saturday's final at 3:00 p.m.

"I was pleased with the defensive man-for-man effort in the second half," said Alvernia head coach Mike Miller after his team's second straight win.  "We're going to need to get stops tomorrow."

Senior Charlie Swiggett (Chester, Pa./Chester) scored a game-high 23 points to pace the Crusaders, and Seth Cornell (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) also reached double figures with 13 points.  Brian Nerney (Middletown, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) finished with seven points, seven boards and Cory Boone (Howard, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) totaled eight points, eight rebounds.

Alvernia blitzed out of the gate with 13 of the first 17 points for a nine-point lead.  Boone sank a pair of free throws to push the lead to 11, and it grew to 25 on a 3-pointer from Swiggett.

The Crusaders built the second half lead to 30 on a free throw from Brian Parker (Chichester, Pa./Chichester) and finished off the 36-point win.

Penn State-Schuylkill will face Reading Area Community College at 1:00 in Saturday's opener.
