Late run lets Oles end long Tommie streak

More news about: St. Thomas

Bobby Fong scored 17 points, including five to start a game-closing 9-3 run over the last 2:28, as St. Olaf (13-6 overall, 8-6 MIAC) slipped past No. 8-ranked St. Thomas, 73-68, in Monday night's MIAC men's basketball game in Schoenecker Arena.

The Tommies (17-2, 12-2) had a 53-game MIAC on-campus winning streak halted and lost for the first time in 10 games in the new Anderson Athletic and Recreation Complex. Their last conference defeat at UST was Jan. 3, 2006 to Augsburg, 62-59.

St. Olaf also ended a 14-game losing streak to St. Thomas.

The Toms, who led 38-32 at halftime, shot 51% from the field and had only eight turnovers. UST had won 54 games in a row when shooting 49 percent or better from the field.

The Oles, who have won seven of their last nine games, shot 64% in the second half (16-of-25) and outscored the Toms 24-15 from 3-point range. St. Olaf knocked down 13-of-15 free throws to UST's 7-for-7 at the line.

The Toms used a 7-0 run to take a 65-64 lead with 2:28 left. But a backdoor basket and a 3-pointer, both by Fong, put the Oles back in control. After a Tyler Nicolai 3-pointer cut the lead to 69-68, Connor Gunderson made a basket and later sank two free throws in the final 35 seconds to help St. Olaf hold on.

For UST, Alex Healy had 11 points and seven assists; Nicolai scored eight of his 11 points in the final 3:30; Tommy Hannon and Anders Halvorsen each scored 10, and Peter Leslie had nine points.

The Toms saw their lead in the MIAC standings slip to 1 1-2 games over idle Carleton (10-3). Gustavus (10-4) lost 68-67 at home to Macalester and stayed two back,

UST plays Wednesday at St. Mary's.
