FARMINGTON -- The University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team scored 19 points over the first 4:16 on its way to a 61-39 North Atlantic Conference win over Maine Maritime Academy tonight at Dearborn Gymnasium.
The Beavers (7-11 overall, 3-5 in NAC) are scheduled to host Green Mountain College Friday at 5:20 p.m., while the Mariners (8-9, 3-4) are tabbed to visit Lyndon State College Friday at 5:30 p.m.
Danny Kane (Bradford, Maine) helped the Beavers' torrid start with 10 of his game-high 13 points in the opening half. DJ Gerrish (Rumford, Maine) and Ben Johnson (Manchester, Maine) each tallied 10 points in the win, while Eric Taylor (Oakland, Maine) grabbed nine rebounds.
The Beavers limited an opponent to under 40 points for the first time in two seasons, limiting the Mariners to 30.2 percent (16-53) from the field. The last time Farmington held an opponent to under 40 points was Maine Maritime on Feb. 7, 2009, in a 54-37 win in Farmington.
Shawn Dostie (Bowdoinham, Maine) led MMA with 10 points and eight rebounds, while Ben Russell (Farmington, Maine) hauled in 11 rebounds. The Beavers outrebounded the Mariners 48-33 for the game
Kane set the tone for the Beavers off the opening tap with a drive to the basket that started a 19-7 stretch for the hosts. A Gerrish layup with 15:44 left in the first half finished off Farmington's fast open. A pull-up three by Pet Sumner (Cramerton, N.C.) gave the Beavers a 28-14 command.
As the pace was in the opening 10 minutes, the scoring came to a halt over the final 9:35. Following a Russell three that pulled the Mariners to 29-19, the Beavers held Maine Maritime scoreless over the next 9:32. However, Farmington was only able to muster a layup apiece by Yusuf Iman (Auburn, Maine) and Kane over that stretch and stumble into intermission at 33-21.
Comparable to the opening, the Beavers outscored MMA 7-2 out of halftime to build a 40-23 lead. The Mariners got to within 44-31 with 12:12 to play, but Andrew Dean (Gorham, Maine) drained a pair of threes to ignite a 12-0 run over the next 5:36 that iced the contest for Farmington for the 61-39 NAC win.
