CHICAGO -- In a game that featured 21 lead changes and 13 ties, Matt Johnson's 25 points helped lift the University of Chicago men's basketball team to a 71-66 overtime victory over Case Western Reserve University in University Athletic Association action Friday night at the Ratner Center.

Chicago (6-11 overall, 3-3 UAA) held the lead for most of the final nine minutes of regulation until a Reid Anderson layup at the 1:26 mark and an Austin Fowler basket with 27 seconds left put the Spartans on top 57-54.

Tom Williams sent the game into overtime when he buried a three-point shot with 13 seconds to go. Williams finished the night with 13 points.

A three-pointer from Michael Sustarsic midway through the extra period gave the Maroons the lead for good, 64-61. Johnson and Williams then combined to sink seven of eight free throw attempts in the game's final minute to seal the win.

Chicago's five-point margin of victory marked the largest advantage either team held throughout the contest.

Both teams struggled from the field and from three-point range. Chicago shot 36% from the floor and 28% from behind the arc (7-for-25), while Case connected at a 38.6% from the field and was just 2-for-18 (11.1%) on three-point tries.

Fowler paced the Spartans (7-10, 3-3) with 24 points, while Tom Summers (13), Anderson (12), and Mike Byrne (11) also finished in double digits. Byrne dished out seven assists.

Steve Stefanou  scored a season-high 14 points in 21 minutes off the bench to help the Maroons snap a three-game losing streak.

The win marked the Maroons' first overtime victory in four tries since an 80-73 decision over the Milwaukee School of Engineering at the Ratner Center on Jan. 5, 2008. Chicago dropped two overtime affairs in 2008-09 and one a year ago.

Chicago's victory capped Friday's closely-contested UAA slate as the league's four games, two of which went to overtime, were decided by a total of 19 points. The Maroons ended the night locked in a four-way tie for third place in the Association.
