Hendrix prevails with balanced attack against Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Jan. 28) -- Hendrix College had five players score in double figures and the Warriors burned the nets from long range in a 78-66 victory over Sewanee-The University of the South on Friday night at The Fowler Center.

Hendrix (6-12, 2-8 SCAC) shot a season-best 9-of-11 (81.8 percent) from behind the arc and recorded a team-best in conference play at 56.6 percent from the field. The Warriors were 8-of-8 from 3-point land and shot a blistering 61.5 percent from the field in the first half.

Junior Ammon Martin led the Warriors with 16 points and also grabbed nine rebounds, while sophomore Jaren Riley added 15 points on 3-of-3 shooting from distance and 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Junior Nick Heathscott tallied 14 points and junior Chris Goodman poured in 13 points with three 3-pointers. First year Colton Primm posted his first double-double with 12 points and 12 boards.

Both teams battled for the lead in the first few minutes of action and a 9-0 swing from Hendrix proved to be the decisive run. Senior James Ewing got the stretch rolling with a 3-pointer and the Warriors owned a 15-6 lead with 14:13 left in the half.

Hendrix then drained four 3-pointers in a three minute span to go up 27-18 with 8:53 on the clock. Martin and Riley would combine for three more trey-bombs before the break and Hendrix eventually owned a 45-32 lead at intermission. The Warriors retained their momentum in the second half and would not let their lead slip under 12 points the rest of the way.

Sophomore Tyler Brown paced Sewanee (6-11, 2-8 SCAC) with 14 points and first year Anvil Nelson added 13 points to the mix. Sophomore Lewis Affronti and first year Valentino Bryant tallied nine points apiece. Sewanee shot 46.2 percent from the field and was just 51.7 percent from the free throw line.

The Tigers won the war down low with a 32-10 advantage in the paint. The Warriors out-rebounded the Tigers, 35-22. Hendrix has now won two-straight against Sewanee and the Warriors improve to 12-19 in the all-time match up.

Hendrix now travels to Atlanta, Ga. on Jan. 30 to face Oglethorpe University at 3 p.m. ET.
