WASHINGTON – On a day in which it celebrated its 100-year anniversary, the CUA men's basketball team unleashed a defensive performance for the ages in a 68-32 win over Juniata.  The Cardinals held the Eagles to 17 percent shooting and only 9 field goals, with the 32 points the fewest they have surrendered since allowing 22 in a win over Gallaudet in 1964.  CUA has now won its last three games by an average of 37 points.

CUA scored the game's first eight points and 10 of the first 12, but Juniata kept things close in the early going, pulling to within five on a Brian Scholly three-pointer with 8:02 remaining before halftime.

With 5:57 on the clock Scholly was fouled on a three-point attempt and after he sank all three shots, the Eagles closed to within just four points, 19-15.  That proved to be the final points of the half for Juniata though, as the Cardinals ran off the final 12 to sprint into halftime leading 31-15.

Andy Roell then drilled a three right after halftime to close CUA's 15-0 run and extend to a 34-15 advantage.

Senior All-American Jason Banzhaf sank a free throw at the 16:58 mark to give the Cardinals their first 20-point lead of the afternoon and when R.J. Dixon got to the hoop for a layup with 15:02 on the clock, CUA found itself up 39-18.

From there, the lead only continued to grow as the Cardinals defense harassed the Eagles into countless empty possessions.  Juniata went a span of over four minutes without a point and CUA's lead grew to 32 following a layup by Pete Schramm at the 9:47 mark.

Another Schramm layup, followed by a Billy Donovan basket and three-pointer from sophomore Gabe Estrada pushed CUA's lead to 37 as the Cardinals put on a show for the dozens of alumni that returned to campus.

Senior Brian Baker capped the day with a three of his own with 5:19 to play to match CUA's largest lead of the afternoon at 37.

Dixon and Banzhaf led CUA with 12 and 11 points, respectively, while Roell scored nine and Schramm added eight.  The Cardinals pulled down 44 rebounds, led by Banzhaf's seven, and they handed out 19 assists on 26 field goals.  CUA made a living in the paint, outscoring the Eagles 28-6 in that category.

Juniata had a long day shooting the basketball, connecting on only 9 of 52 attempts (17.3 percent) and the Eagles did not have anyone in double figures. 

At halftime of Saturday's game, CUA honored a large group of alumni with an on-court presentation that included many of the program's 1,000-point scorers, basketball Hall of Famers and the 2001 National Championship Team.

CUA will now hit the road for its next two games, beginning on Friday, February 4 when the Cardinals travel to the Lehigh Valley to take on Moravian.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
