Cortland Trio Shines in 69-57 Win vs. Fredonia

CORTLAND, N.Y. –Sophomores Jeremy Smith (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge) and Jesse Winter (Rockville Centre/South Side) and freshman John Connolly (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) combined to score all but 10 of Cortland's points as the Red Dragons defeated visiting Fredonia, 69-57, in a SUNYAC contest.
 
Smith scored 22 points, Winter finished with 20 points and four assists, and Connolly recorded a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Connolly tied his career high in scoring and set a career best in rebounding.
 
Cortland (6-11, 3-7 SUNYAC) made 12-of-26 three-pointers (46 percent) and shot 48 percent overall from the field. Connolly made 3-of-4 three-pointers, Winter hit 4-of-8 treys and Smith was 3-of-8 from behind the arc.
 
Junior Adam Smith (Big Flats/Horseheads) led Fredonia (5-11, 2-8 SUNYAC) with 23 points and 14 rebounds. He finished 10-of-16 from the field, and half of his rebounds were on the offensive glass. Joseph Monahan (Floral Park/Holy Cross) scored 11 points, including 3-of-8 three-point shooting.
 
Cortland trailed only once at 4-3 two minutes into the game. A 16-3 run over the next three-plus minutes, featuring two Connolly treys, gave Cortland a 19-7 lead. Fredonia, however, fought back to within 25-23 on a Dalton Kashmer (South Dayton/Pine Valley) three-pointer with 7:24 left in the half.
 
The Red Dragons answered with the next 12 points, 10 from Winter, and took a 37-23 lead with 1:16 left. Cortland was up 12 at halftime. Fredonia got back within five at 50-45 after Monahan's three-pointer with 8:50 left, but sophomore Harrison Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) nailed three-pointers on two of Cortland's next three possessions, followed by a Connolly long-distance shot that gave the hosts a 59-45 lead with 6:17 left. The lead remained in double figures after that run.
 
Cortland will host Buffalo State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
