SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth burned Pacific along every inch of the three-point line Friday night as the Pirates saw six different player hit from downtown in a 94-48 rout of the Boxers in Northwest Conference men's basketball action at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
The Pirates (17-0, 8-0 NWC), ranked No. 3 in the latest D3Hoops.com Top-25 poll, connecting of 55.9 percent from three-point range (19-34). Whitworth was hottest in the second half, connecting on 10 of 15 from the arch in the final 20 minutes.
Jack Loofburrow led the Pirates with a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds, helping lead the three-point barrage with six from downtown. Clay Gebbers connected for a career-high 20 points, which also included six treys. David Riley added 20 points and Mike Taylor finished with 10. For the game, the Pirates shot 50.8 percent from the field (33-65) and out-rebounded the Boxers 45-29.
Colin Wester (So., Sherwood, Ore.) led Pacific (3-13, 2-5 NWC) with 15 points, hitting on 6 of 14 from the field. LeMar Anglin (Sr., Chicago, Ill.) was the only other Pacific player in double figures with 10. The Boxers finished the night shooting 31.4 percent from the field (16-51) and just 3 of 19 from long range.
Pacific opened the game trying to make a statement, scoring on their first three possessions and taking an 8-3 lead on an Anglin lay-in two minutes in. The lead quickly shrank to one point and after an Adam McElwee (So., Woodinville, Wash.) free throw at the 15:01 mark, the Pirates put their game into high gear. Whitworth scored the next 15 points, capping the streak with a David Riley lay-in to give the home team a 23-9 lead with 8:50 left in the stanza.
Wester snapped the scoreless drought with his lay-in at the 8:23 mark, but Gebbers found his stride from three-point range and used his fifth trey of the half to put the Pirates up 23 points, 38-15, with 3:16 left. A pair of Anglin free throws with two minutes left allowed the Boxers to cut the deficit to 21 at halftime, 41-20.
The second half saw Whitworth only get hotter as more players got into the three-point shooting parade. The Boxers reduced the lead to 21 points on a Wester three-pointer at the 16-minute mark, but the Pirates scored the 10 points, six on treys by Taylor and Gebbers, to go up by 31 points, 61-30, with 13:47 to go.
The Boxers came back within 25 points on a Connor Hurley (Fr., Portland, Ore.) trey, but Whitworth kept the three-pointers coming. The Pirates went up by 36 points on another Loofburrow trey at the 9:18 mark, which started a string of five consecutive treys that gave Whitworth a 40-point lead, 81-41, with 7:34 left, and would build as much as a 44-point advantage late.
Pacific finishes off the eastern Washington road trip on Saturday as they head to Walla Walla to take on Whitman. Game time is at 8 p.m.
