Hobart wins 6th straight, dominates Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—The Hobart basketball team won its sixth consecutive game tonight with an 88-57 Liberty League victory at Vassar. With 12 wins in 15 games, the Statesmen are off to the best start in the program's 101-season history.

Hobart completely dominated the final stat sheet, outshooting the Brewers 48.4 percent to 36.7 percent and outrebounding them 44-28. The Statesmen forced 22 Vassar turnovers, while committing just 14. Hobart held the advantage in the paint (40-16), off turnovers (32-14), on second chances (18-6), and off the bench (41-28).

The Statesmen's Matt Pebole led all scorers with 20 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.Blair Helton added 18 points, also with two makes from beyond the arc. Josh Kalenderian enjoyed a perfect night, sinking all four of his shots from the floor and all four of his free throws for 12 points. Mark Bruce also reached double digits with 10 points, including two threes.

Caleb McGraw and Jon Herzog notched double figure performances for Vassar with 16 and 10 points, respectively.

Hobart never trailed in the contest, using seven unanswered points to build a 10-point edge midway through the first half. McGraw stopped the run with a traditional 3-point play. It was the last time the Brewers' deficit was in single digits. From there, the Statesmen outscored their hosts 23-9 to take a 39-18 lead into halftime. Helton led all scorers with 10 points at the break.

McGraw made a 3-pointer to open the second half scoring and trim Hobart's lead to 18. Stefan Thompson and Pebole sandwiched layups around a Vassar turnover and the Statesmen cruised to victory.

Coupled with Hamilton's 73-66 win at Rensselaer tonight, Hobart is alone in first place in the Liberty League with a 4-0 record. The Statesmen will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 22, when they visit the Engineers. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. Fans can follow the action online with Live Stats and Streaming Video.
