Choctaws Handle Comets, 79-68, Snap Four-Game Skid

CLINTON, MS - The Mississippi College men's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 79-68 win over the University of Texas at Dallas on Thursday night in A.E. Wood Coliseum.

Texas-Dallas grabbed a 9-4 lead with 16:51 remaining in the first half to gain their largest advantage of the game.  Junior Greg Pulliam nailed a jumper with 15:40 remaining in the period and MC would never relinquish the lead.

The Comets cut the MC lead to 32-29 with 4:48 to go in the initial frame on a jumper by Carter Nash.  The Choctaws extended the lead to 13 points with a 10-0 run over the next two minutes.  MC would carry a 12-point lead into the break at 46-34.

The second half opened th with the Choctaws going on a 12-4 run to take a 20-point advantage at 58-38 with 14:59 to go in the game.  The Comets would not get any closer than nine points the rest of the way.

The Choctaws shot a season-best 59.6% (28-47) from the floor for the game, including 12-19 in the second half.  MC cleaned up some free throw woes that had plagued them over the previous two games, going 17-22 from the line, including sophomore Cameron Bounds going 9-10.

Bounds led the team with 19 points on 5-7 shooting from the floor and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.  Senior Ken Black poured in 16 points on 8-13 shooting, while Pulliam score 15 points.

The Choctaws recorded 19 assists on 28 field goals, with senior Kelvin Lester leading the way with four to go along with nine points.  Seven different Choctaws tallied at least two helpers.

The Comets were led by Chris Barnes with 23 points on 9-18 shooting from the floor.  Barnes also pulled down a team-high nine boards.  Brandon Green scored 20 for UTD, including making four three-pointers.  No other Comet player had more than six points.

The MC defense was stout in the second half, holding UTD to just 30% (10-33) from the floor.  The Choctaws forced the Comets to shoot 33 three-pointers, only making eight of them.

The Choctaws will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they host Ozarks at 3:00 p.m. in the "Golden Dome."
