Tommies' big men play big in road victory

More news about: St. Thomas

Junior center Tommy Hannon scored a career-best 21 points and senior Anders Halvorsen added 18 points, eight rebounds and seven blocks as the No. 4-ranked Tommies outlasted the host Macalester Scots, 75-63, in Wednesday night's conference men's basketball game in St. Paul.

The Tommies (14-1 overall, 9-1 MIAC) retained a one-game lead at the halfway point of the MIAC race over Gustavus and Carleton (both 8-2).

Halvorsen's scoring output was one point off his career best. His seven blocks, a career high, matched the most by an MIAC player in the last four seasons and were the most since ex-Tommie All-American Isaac Rosefelt blocked nine in a December 2006 win at Macalester.

Pierce Peters led Macalester with 20 points and 13 rebounds. The Scots (1-14, 1-9) shot just 33 percent from the field.

UST was outscored 21-6 at the 3-point arc but shot 52 percent from the field and had only six turnovers. It was the Toms' 52nd consecutive win when they shot 49 percent or better from the floor.

St. Thomas broke to a 16-4 lead and was up 28-19 at halftime. The Scots never pulled closer than six points in the second half.

Alex Healy scored 14 points, and Teddy Archer added six assists and five rebounds.

The Toms are home Saturday at the AARC for a 3 p.m. varsity game vs. St. John's. A 1 p.m. junior-varsity game precedes the action. The Johnnies were idle Wednesday but halted a five-game losing streak Monday night with a win over St. Mary's.
