Hamline's 3-point parade sinks Tommies

More news about: St. Thomas

The No. 4-ranked Tommie basketball team was outscored 36-15 from 3-point range and took its first defeat of the season Monday night as the host Hamline Pipers scored a 92-79 victory.

Senior Carl Hipp had 10 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks, and Tyler Pannell had five treys in a 17-point output for the Pipers (8-6 overall, 6-3 MIAC).

Hamline surpassed its 81.4 ppg scoring average and shot 61% from the floor as it ended an 11-game losing streak to the Tommies. The Pipers rallied from a seven-point late first-half deficit and won its 12th home game in its last 14 tries.

St. Thomas (13-1, 8-1) had a 25-game regular-season win streak halted and also saw its 13-game road win streak end. UST shot just 27 percent in the second half (10-of-37) and missed eight of its last nine shots in the final 3:00.

UST's Tyler Nicolai had 20 points, Alex Healy had 16 points, and Tommy Hannon added 10 points and five boards. Nicolai surpassed 200 career 3-pointers as he sank four, all in the second half, to reach 203 in his 100th career start.

St. Thomas' lead in the MIAC is reduced to one game over both Gustavus and Carleton, which both won Monday night games.

The Pipers' 12 made 3-pointers (in 21 tries) were their most since they knocked down 13 during a January 2007 game against Augsburg. The 12 were the most allowed by the Tommies in six seasons, covering 165 games.

It was the Tommies' first double-digit margin in a conference loss since January 2006, and their most points allowed to an MIAC opponent in a non-overtime game since a 93-91 road  loss to Hamline in January 2005.

St. Thomas pulled within 77-72 with 5:00 to play but Hamline outscored it 15-3 over the next few minutes.

The Toms play Wednesday night at Macalester, and return home Saturday afternoon to face St. John's.
