(Buffalo, NY) – The Medaille College men's basketball team was hitting on all cylinders as D'Youville College visited the Sullivan Center this evening. The Spartans paid the price for the Mavs strong play as Medaille rolled past their crosstown rivals (80-37) in AMCC action.
The first eight minutes of the game would see a close battle as the teams were knotted at (10-10), but then the Mavs began to knock down their shots while playing stifling defense. They headed into the locker room with a (39-22) halftime advantage.
The Maverick bench was a big part of victory as they outscored their counterparts (46-6). Junior Phil Maiarana (Kenmore, NY/St. Joseph's Collegiate) came off the bench to score a game high (13) points. He did so on (5 of 6) shooting from the floor, while knocking down (3 of 4) from behind the arc. He also grabbed four boards and dished out three assists.
Senior Ricky Reed (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) tallied (12) points, grabbed (6) rebounds and assisted on four buckets. Fellow senior Ron Malicki (Machias, NY/Pioneer) moved within (33) points of the 1,000 career point mark with his ten point evening. He now has (967) points in his Medaille career.
Senior Joe Mogavero (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) and junior Steve Bryant (Lancaster, NY/Bishop Timon) each grabbed a game high seven rebounds as Medaille dominated the glass (51-25). They would also control the paint as they outscored the Spartans (40-10) in that area.
A remarkable stat in this game was the limited amount of free throw attempts. The Mavs were (7 of 11) from the charity stripe while the Spartans didn't reach the line at all in the loss. The Mavs connected on (54.2%) of their shots in the game and knocked down (47.4%) of their shots from behind the arc.
The win is the second straight for Medaille and it pushes their record to (11-5) overall and (7-2) in AMCC play. The Mavs will go for their third straight win as they take on conference leading Penn State-Behrend on Wednesday (1/19) in a critical 8:00pm road game.
