Timely Threes Assist CLU in First SCIAC Win

CLAREMONT, Calif. - After taking over the lead with just over seven minutes into Saturday's game Cal Lutheran never trailed surviving a second half scare from Pomona-Pitzer before defeating the Sagehens 59-54 at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Greg Grimm scored nine straight points including his only three pointer of the game that broke a 10-10 tie with 12:43 left in the first half. A 10-0 scoring run was capped off by a Collin Knudsen three-pointer putting the Kingsmen up eight before CLU extended its margin to double figures at intermission.

Despite shooting just 6-for-20 from downtown Cal Lutheran used a couple of timely three pointers in halting Pomona-Pitzer's offensive momentum.

The first came from Jayvaughn Nettles that put the Kingsmen back up by five after the Sagehens opened the second half on an 8-0 scoring run. The second needed both a CLU timeout and a triple from Aaron Fisher to halt a 9-0 Pomona-Pitzer spurt breaking a 38-38 tie with nine minutes left.

Under one minute left and up only three, Xavier Walton essentially drained the game-sealing three pointer putting Cal Lutheran up six with 44 seconds remaining in regulation.

Cal Lutheran was able to maintain a lead throughout most of the final 32 minutes of regulation with its near flawless free throw shooting. As a team Cal Lutheran shot 19-of-22 from the free throw line, led by Grimm's 11-of-12 effort. In contrast Pomona-Pitzer converted only 6-of-13 attempts at the charity stripe.

While Grimm score 15 of the team's 31 points in the first half, teammate Aaron Van Klaveren did most of his damage in the second half scoring eight of his 10 points and nine of his 11 boards (seven offensive).

Leading 57-54 with only seconds remaining, Aaron Fisher capped of his 13 point performance by sinking a pair of free throws to clinch the game.

Xavyr Moss scored 13 of his team-high 17 points in the second half to lead the Sagehens.

Cal Lutheran (7-7, 1-2 SCIAC) will remain on the road to face Caltech (4-10, 0-3 SCIAC) on Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m.
