MADISON, N.J. (January 15, 2011) - Junior Asmar
Capers (Bridgewater,
N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) fell four points shy of tying a
24-year old school record for points in a game as the Rangers
cruised to a 90-74 victory over Catholic this afternoon.
Terrell
Brown (Camden, N.J.,/Woodrow Wilson) and
Mike
Mayes (Linden, N.J/St. Mary's) were the only
other two other Rangers in double figures. For the second
consecutive night Brown registered a double-double, scoring 14
points and hauling in 14 rebounds. Mayes was lights out, tallying
14 points while going 7-for-8 from the floor including a 2-for-3
from beyond the arc.
The night and better yet, the secon half belonged to Capers. The
junior would get 29 of his 41 in the final 20 minutes of play.
Catholic (11-5/2-3 Landmark) looked to have the Landmark
Conference's leading scorer in check holding him to only 12 points
in the first. He would hit three three-pointers in each half and
helped ice the game for the Rangers down the stretch, finishing
13-of-17 from the charity stripe. Earlier this season Capers became
Drew's first 30-point scorer in a decade, today he became the first
Ranger to drop 40 since Hall of Famer Dan Pierce tied
the school record nearly 15 years ago to the day, scoring 45
against Delaware Valley.
Drew (6-9, 2-3 Landmark) set the tone early and got off to a quick
5-0 start courtesy of a Brown steal and a long ball from Capers. At
the 14:55 mark the Rangers had built their largest lead of the half
with a eight point advantage thanks to a Mayes three. The Cardinals
would get within two of the Ranger lead but Drew was able to get
the last thee baskets of the half, capped by a steal by Brown who
found a slashing Lucas
Levenson (Margate City, N.J./Atlantic City) for
the fast-break layup.
Drew extended its lead into double digits in the second half and
never looked back. The Rangers didn't trail for the entire 40
minutes and got the largest lead up to 19 late in the game. Since
entering the Landmark Conference in 2007, the Cardinals have taken
the last four matchups with Drew's only win coming in the 2007-08
season.
Next weekend the Rangers will hit the road as they travel to
Susquehanna on Friday and Juniata on Saturday. Tip-off is set for
5:30 PM and 2:00 PM respectively.
