Worcester, MA --- Matt Carr (Somersworth, NH) overcame foul trouble to share game-high honors with 15 points and seven rebounds to pace No. 23 ranked WPI to a 68-53 victory over MIT in a key NEWMAC men's basketball contest on Thursday evening.

The win, coupled with Springfield loss at Wheaton, leaves the Crimson and Gray (12-3, 2-0) as the only undefeated in conference play.  MIT, who is receiving votes in the D3hoops.com Top 25 slips to 10-5 overall and 0-2 in NEWMAC action. 

Carr was dominate in the early going, scoring eight of WPI's first 11 points in the opening 6:18.  The hosts twice led by 11 in the first half and took a 30-21 lead into the locker room at the break.  

WPI, keyed by a pair of Kyle Nadeau (Webster, MA) 3-pointers, rattled off the first eight points of the second stanza.  The lead would remain in double figures the rest of the way.

Jeffrey Robinson (Granby, CT) tallied 11 of his 13 points after halftime.  Nadeau chipped in with 11 points to go alone with a game-best six assists.  Fernando Perez (Lowell, MA) added nine points off the bench for Worcester's Engineers, which received an outstanding defensive effort from David Brown (Lowell, MA), who swiped three steals.

Mitchell Kates (Colts Neck, NJ) paced the MIT effort with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor.  Jamie Karraker (Morgantown, WV) and Tim Donegan (Allison Park, PA) each added 10 points for the visitors, while Will Tashman (Atherton, CA) filled the stat columns with nine points, seven rebounds, five assists, a block and a steal.  

WPI parlayed 21 MIT turnovers into 29 points while only committing 10 miscues themselves.  The hosts also used a 34-26 edge in rebounding to outscore Cambridge's Engineers 14-3 in second chance points. 

The matchup featured the two schools that have won or shared the last seven NEWMAC regular season titles.  WPI had won 14 straight in the series prior to last year as MIT swept the season set en route to its first conference crown.

WPI kicks off a two-game road trip on Saturday at 3pm with a road trip to New London, CT to take on Coast Guard.  MIT is also back in action on Saturday, hosting Clark at 2pm.
