CAMBRIDGE, MA -- A 13-0 run starting at the 6:26 mark of the second half turned a four-point Lesley lead into a 59-50 deficit, which was too much for the Lynx to overcome in a 62-58 defeat to Newbury Tuesday night in New England Collegiate Conference men's basketball play in Cambridge.
Newbury's (3-9, 2-1 NECC) Chris Torres (Brockton, MA/Brockton) led all scorers with 20, while Thorton Paul (Boston, MA/West Roxbury) threw in a team-best 19 points for Lesley (3-10, 0-2 NECC).
Paul's third three-pointer within the first 6:00 opened up a 13-9 Lynx lead. The Lynx opened up a five-point lead, at 22-17, on a Jesus Trejo (Methuen, MA/Metheun) jumper just inside the 9:00 mark, but a Tim Young (Brockton, MA/Brockton) three-pointer capped a Nighthawks 9-0 run in which the visitors took a 28-22 lead.
Two straight Harold Smith (Florence, AZ/Florence) baskets and a Paul layup tied the contest at 32 at half. Torres and Paul led all scorers, each with 12 points through halftime.
Two more Smith jump hook shots and a Grant Cobb (Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) layup opened up a 44-40 Lynx lead, which Lesley held inside the 10:00 mark. But Newbury's 13-0 run, which started with a John Rowley, Jr. (Hartford, CT/Rockville) trifecta at the 7:30 mark, distanced the visitors for good.
Rowley scored five during the run, while the 6-foot Torres crashed the boards for a pair of putbacks in the stretch that distancing the Nighthawks, owners of a 42-37 rebounding advantage on the night.
For Lesley, Smith added 12 points on 6-8 shooting, while Cobb and John Sanchez (Carson, CA/Saint John Bosco) each added nine.
Newbury's Peterson Bernard added 15 points and nine rebounds, and Rowley added a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds.
