MILTON, Mass. -- Sophomore guard Sedale Jones (Pittsfield, Mass.) posted a double-double by scoring 29 points and grabbing 10 rebounds as the Curry College men's basketball team defeated the University of New England, 79-66, in The Commonwealth Conference Conference action Tuesday evening.
Jones was 10-for-15 overall from the floor and 5-for-6 from beyond the arc for the Colonels (4-9, 2-0 TCCC) -- the top rated team in the TCCC preseason coaches' poll. He added six assists.
Curry had 12 players get into the scoring column, including a 11-point effort off the bench from junior guard Chris Brown (Boston, Mass.).
Junior Marcus Winn (Austin, Texas) and senior Chas Rentrope (Peoria, Ariz.) combined to score 38 points for UNE (2-12, 0-2). Winn tallied 20 points with five treys, while Rentrope scored 18 utilizing 8-for-8 accuracy from the charity stripe. Rentrope was also credited with a team-high eight boards.
Leading by five (21-16) and 3:24 on the clock, Curry closed the first half with 14-7 run to establish a 35-23 advantage heading into the locker room. Jones had eight points during the spurt, including a buzzer-beating trey to conclude the frame.
The Colonels pulled away over the opening 10 minutes of the second half to lead 62-34 before the Nor'easters began to light it up the rest of the way.
UNE held a 37-29 margin on the backboards but was hampered by 32.7 percent (17 of 52) shooting from the floor, compared to a 51.9 percent conversion rate (28 of 54) for Curry.
Both teams take to the court again Saturday at 3 p.m on the road. The Nor'easters play at Salve Regina University and Curry takes on Regis.
