Privateers Drop Home Contest To First-Place St. Joseph’s, 99-65

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 10, 2011) – The Maritime men's basketball team lost to the top-ranked team in the Skyline Conference, St. Joseph's, at home Monday night by the score of 99-65. The Privateers fall to 5-8 overall on the season (3-5 Skyline), while the Golden Eagles improve to 11-1 (7-0 Skyline).

Maritime was led by senior Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High), who recorded a double-double with a game-high 22 points and 11 rebounds. Classmate Quamel Lyerly (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence) also registered a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Mike McSloy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) chipped in with 16 points to round out the Privateers' double-digit scorers.

St. Joseph's exploded out of the gates and built up a 14-0 lead over the first 4:10 of the game on three 3-pointers, a 3-point play and a good jumper. Their lead reached 21 points, 27-6, on a jumper at 11:06. The Golden Eagles went into the locker room with a 47-26 lead. Maritime shot just 24.2-percent from the field in the half, while St. Joe's was on target with 46.2-percent of their shots.

In the second half, Maritime came out strong, scoring the first five points of the period. For about two minutes later in the half, the Privateers cut their deficit 10 points, from 38 to 28 (86-58), by scoring on four straight possessions while keeping the Golden Eagles off the board. The first place team was forced to call a timeout. However, Maritime was unable to cut into the deficit drastically as St. Joe's held on for the 34-point victory.

The Golden Eagles were led by Chris Jimenez, who scored a team-high 21 points with eight rebounds. Olivier Laurent recorded a double-double with 19 points and led the team with 11 boards. Vincent Russo rounded out the double-digit scorers with 19 points as well.

The Maritime men's basketball team will return to the court on Sunday, Jan. 16, when the squad plays host to Skyline-foe Old Westbury at 4 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
