BUENA VISTA, VA. -- Day two of the Southern Virginia Classic was over early, as Eastern Mennonite allowed the first bucket to Berkeley College (NJ) before scoring the next ten and running away with a 107-60 victory. The game was never in doubt after the opening minutes as the No. 10 Runnin Royals moved to 11-2 on the season.
After using the 10-0 run to take the lead, EMU tacked on a 16-0 streak to blow open a 29-7 advantage after a George Johnson (Richmond, Va./Miller School) jumper just 8:02 in.
The men forced 23 first-half turnovers en route to a 61-24 lead at the break. The Royals then scored the first seven of the second half to push the edge over 40 as they cruised to the win.
Todd Phillips (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) scored ten points in each half as he scored 20 or more for the fourth straight game. The senior forward added six assists, five steals and two blocked shots.
Johnson had 13 along with his game high seven assists and three steals. Eli Crawford (Staunton, Va./R.E. Lee) hit all seven of his shots and had 17 points and seven rebounds.
Vance Washington (Winchester, Va./Handley) led the bench with 11 points. Marlon Organ (Harrisonburg, Va./Spotswood) had five offensive rebounds and three assists. Dajon Daniel (Fredericksburg, Va./Mountain View) had six rebounds in just eight minutes of play.
EMU forced 30 turnovers and had 17 steals. The men also had a 47-34 rebounding edge on the Knights, including 26 offensive boards.
The wins ups the Runnin Royals' record to 11-2. They return to Old Dominion Athletic Conference play next Wednesday, playing at No. 11 Randolph-Macon on Jan. 12. The Yellow Jackets handed EMU one of its two losses in a 73-68 decision in Harrisonburg on Dec. 4.
