MADISON, Wis. - Few things in basketball can swing a game as much as throw shooting. The Edgewood College men's basketball team and sophomore Tony Cates felt both the success and the frustration of the charity stripe, but ultimately claimed a 62-60 overtime win over MSOE in a Northern Athletics Conference showdown. The Eagles scored all eight of their points in overtime at the free throw line, after struggling there in regulation play.

Edgewood College's last field goal of the game came on a Kent Faurote jump shot with 4:14 left to play in the second half. MSOE's all-conference forward Austin Meier answered with a bucket of his own to tie the game at 52. After trading empty possessions, Cates was fouled with 49 seconds remaining, but his just one of two free throws. The Raiders went back to Meier on the other end and he came through with a shot in the paint to give MSOE (9-4, 3-2 NAC) a 54-53 lead.

The Eagles called timeout with 10 seconds remaining to set up their final play. Faurote fed the ball into Cates on the block, but MSOE's Eric Bohrer was whistled for his fifth foul with 2.3 seconds left. Cates went to the line again with a chance to give Edgewood College (8-5, 4-1 NAC) the lead, but only made the second of his two throws. Meier's half court attempt at the buzzer threatened the rim, but didn't connect and the Eagles were in their third overtime game of the season tied at 54.

Edgewood College made just seven of 15 free throws in the first two halves, but came through in the extra session. Faurote made three of four free throws on the first two Eagles possessions of the extra session to build a modest 57-54 lead. The Eagles still led 59-56 with less than a minute to go when two lapses inbounding the ball gave MSOE a chance to grab the lead. First the Raiders' Bennett Deacon picked off an inbounds pass under the Eagle basket and MSOE converted it into a Meier putback at the other end. Then Barczak and Cashton Craig miscommunicated against the Raider press, and Barczak's pass sailed out of bounds.

That gave the Raiders' a chance to grab the lead, which they did 60-59 on Deacon's driving layup with 26 seconds left to go. The Eagles inbounded with 18 seconds to go, and again it was Faurote dishing across the paint to Cates who was fouled going up for the shot with 3.2 seconds to play. This time Cates calmly drilled both free throws and the Eagles had a 61-60 lead. MSOE muffed the ensuing inbounds pass out of bounds, which allowed Craig to make one more free throw with 0.7 seconds to play. The Raiders' final long pass was tipped by Barczak allowing the clock to expire on the Eagles' fourth NAC victory.

Lost in the tension of the end of the game, was a milestone reached by junior guard Ben Wisniewski. The New Berlin native nailed a jump shot from the top of the key with 1:25 left in the first half, which put him over 1,000 points for his career. Wisniewski becomes the 17th men's basketball player in school history to reach 1,000 points, and the seventh Eagle to reach four digits during his junior year. Wisniewski shared team-high honors with Faurote and now has 1,012 points for his career.

In addition to his 15 points, Faurote grabbed 11 rebounds, the highest individual total for any Eagle this season. Barczak came off the bench for the first time this season to score 13 points on 6-for-9 shooting. Cates was the fourth Eagle in double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds. Edgewood College, who ranks 19th in the nation in field goal percentage, shot 45.8 percent from the field for the game and outrebounded the Raiders 40-29.

MSOE was led by Austin Meier with a game-high 28 points and 10 rebounds. No other Raider reached double figures, but Oren Bloom and Victor Bande each scored eight. MSOE struggled mightily from the three-point line shooting just 17.4 percent (4-for-23).

Edgewood College will continue to enjoy winter break from the comfort of home. The Eagles will face Wisconsin Lutheran College on Wednesday, January 12th at the Todd Wehr Edgedome. Like all Eagle home games, the game can be seen live on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
