FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College men's basketball team (8-5, 4-2 CAC) won its third straight game and improved to 5-1 at the Odom Fitness Center at Fort Detrick with a 68-57 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Marymount University (Va.) (2-12, 0-6 CAC) Saturday evening.
Hood demonstrated steady offensive prowess in both halves, shooting 42.3 percent from the field for the game. The Saints led briefly on two occasions, once at the 13:14 mark (9-8) and again at the 10:08 mark (13-12) but the Blazers held the upperhand for the majority of the matchup. After taking an eight-point edge into the locker room, 30-22, the Blazers kept the Saints at bay in the final 20 minutes and had an answer for every Marymount run. The Saints closed to within one possession of tying it, 49-46, with 6:37 to go in regulation, but junior Brenden Straughn scored Hood's next seven points in a row, capped by a conventional three-point play, to stretch the Hood lead back to nine with 4:53 to go. The Saints got no closer than seven the rest of the way. First-year Cameron Cook paced the Blazer attack with 16 points, including three triples, while Straughn added 15, all in the second half. Senior Tyler Snoots also reached double figures with 13 points and nine rebounds while junior Jamal Bell added a spark off the bench by hitting all four of his field goals for nine points. Tarek Ammoury led all scorers with 18 points for the visitors. Hood outrebounded the Saints, 36-33, and forced 22 Marymount miscues. Hood is in fourth place in the CAC standings and next travels to CAC foe York College (Pa.) Wednesday for an 8 p.m. tip. The Spartans sit in fifth place in the conference. |
