SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior forward Terrance Favors (Boston, MA) scored a game-high 20 points and senior center Trae Jacobs (Lexington Park, MD) added 19 points as Becker rallied for a 65-63 victory over Western New England in a non-conference men's basketball game Thursday evening (Jan. 6) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.
The Hawks, who had a five-game win streak snapped by WPI on December 30, improve to 9-2. The Golden Bears, who were playing their first game of the New Year, remain winless at 0-10 after dropping their third two-point decision of the season.
Favors connected on 7-of-12 shots from the field and made a crucial three-point play with 1:07 left that broke a 62-62 tie.
Senior guard Chris Devine (Wilbraham, MA) then made a free throw with 48.6 seconds left to cut the margin to one.
Becker missed a shot with the time clock winding down and WNEC called timeout with 10 seconds remaining.
After a scramble for a loose ball, the Golden Bears retained possession and the Hawks then called timeout with 1.2 seconds left. Sophomore forward Moody Doherty (Roselle, NJ) stole the inbounds pass to preserve the win.
Neither team led by more than three points in the first half until Western New England scored 11 unanswered points to take a 36-28 lead at the break. Becker opened the second half with an 8-0 run to tie the contest and the game remained tight with six ties down to the final minute.
Devine finished with 18 points and seven rebounds while senior forward Brad Thomka (Springfield, MA) had 14 points and sophomore guard Damon Alston (New Britain, CT) 12 points.
WNEC had one of its best shooting outings of the season after making 45.2% of the field goal attempts. Becker fared well from the floor as well making 43.1% of its shots. Each team had 31 rebounds.
Favors also had six rebounds and five assists in a strong performance. Jacobs also had a nice shooting game making 8-of-12 shots to go along with five rebounds.
