ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst College men's basketball team opened the CCIW portion of its schedule by scoring a 73-52 victory over Millikin University.
Elmhurst improved to 6-6 overall while Millikin dropped to 1-10 overall and 0-1 in league play.
The Bluejays opened the game on a 14-2 run over the first five minutes and never trailed in the contest. Elmhurst built a 17-point advantage in the opening half and led 41-26 at halftime. Elmhurst continued to pull away in the second half, building a 30-point advantage midway through the half and cruising to the 21-point victory.
Zack Boyd led all scorers by pouring in a game-high 24 points. Boyd shot 10-of-13 from the floor, including 4-of-6 from three-point range. D'Ante Foster came off the bench to score a career-high 12 points for the Bluejays. Steve Crane pitched in with 10 points for Elmhurst. Ten different players totaled points for the Bluejays in the victory.
The Bluejays finished the contest shooting 57.4 percent (27-of-47) from the floor, including a whopping 70.8 percent (17-of-24) in the opening half. Elmhurst connected on 50 percent of its three-point attempts (8-of-16) and 73.3 percent (11-of-15) of its free throw attempts. The Bluejays also dominated the game on the glass, outrebounding Millikin 36-24.
Kelvin Jacobs led Millikin in the loss with 20 points and nine rebounds. Matt Merrigan added eight points while Rodney Clark and Derron Wooten scored seven points apiece for the Big Blue.
Millikin ended the contest shooting 32.7 percent (18-of-55) from the filed, including 30.0 percent (3-of-10) from beyond the arc.
Elmhurst travels to Augustana College on Saturday, January 8.
