Rust completes season sweep after 68-64 decision at Hendrix

CONWAY, Ark. (Jan. 4) -- Hendrix College and Rust College battled through 11 lead changes and seven ties in a nip and tuck contest at Grove Gymnasium on Tuesday afternoon.  Junior Marcus Erves scored 16 points and junior Jahrell Holmes grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Bearcats to a 68-64 victory.

Hendrix opened the game with a hot hand as sophomore Jaren Riley, junior Chris Goodman and junior Ammon Martin each knocked down a 3-pointer in the first three minutes of the contest.  Neither team stretched its lead past seven points the entire game and Hendrix led for the last six minutes of the first half, eventually taking a 35-30 advantage into the break.

The Warriors carried their lead into the first 10 minutes of the second half.  The lead changed hands five times over the next 10 minutes.  Junior William Montgomery knocked down the go-ahead jumper with 2:53 remaining.

Rust won the battle in the paint by out-scoring Hendrix 42-22.  The Bearcats scored 14 points off the Warriors' 11 turnovers.  The Rust bench also scored 21 points and the Bearcats tallied 15 second-chance points off 12 offensive rebounds.

Riley led the Warriors with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting.  Junior Nick Heathscott added 13 points and a team-high nine boards.  First year Colton Primm scored 10 points and denied two shots.  Martin led the team with six assists.

Rust completed the season sweep of Hendrix after winning a 82-69 win on Nov. 30.  The Warriors fall to 4-7 on the year and will look to get back to their winning ways when the team travels to Southwestern University on Friday, Jan. 7 at 8 p.m. CT.
