LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's men's basketball team marked its place in a highly successful program history on Sunday by posting a 65-55 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over the host Hornets of Lynchburg College. History was made as the Marlins improved their season start to 12-0...the best undefeated start ever for a VWC men's basketball team. It tops the former mark of 11-0, set by the 2004-05 squad. Virginia Wesleyan, ranked No.3 nationally, helped itself by knocking down 10-of-29 three point attempts, led by sophomore Chris Teasley (Newport News, Va./Menchville) and rookie DJ Woodmore (Virginia Beach/Landstown) with three each. It was the second time this season that the Marlins nailed 10 triples in a game and improved VWC's record to 56-14 in games where Virginia Wesleyan has connected on at least 10 three-pointers. The VWC record is 15 set against Guilford College in a 92-62 victory in 2006. VWC improved to 38-24 overall in the men's basketball series with Lynchburg, winning for the 21st consecutive time since 2000. A 13-3 Virginia Wesleyan run in a four minute span midway through the second half put the Marlins in control for good after a Lynchburg (5-7, 1-3) battled to keep things within range. Shawn Minor (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) scored on a layup to pull the Hornets within a 39-35 score, before VWC junior Donald Vaughn (Woodbridge, Va./Dumfries Potomac) stole the ball and followed with a dunk that sparked the Marlins. In the next four minutes Virginia Wesleyan pushed the lead out to 52-38, following a pair of timely triples from sophomore Tre' Ford (Falls Church, Va./J.E.B. Stuart)and Teasley. Lynchburg chipped away at the deficit in the following minutes and pulled within a 57-53 score with 2:19 on the clock on an Austin Chillemi (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) layuup. But, Virginia Wesleyan answered quickly when Woodmore ripped home a triple off a Teasley assist seconds later. Lynchburg was never closer than five points the rest of the way. Virginia Wesleyan's long-range shooting effort helped to offset a big afternoon at the free throw lines for Lynchburg. The Hornets hit 18-of-22 free throws, led by Chillemi with 8-of-11. VWC attempted 14 freebies and hit nine, including five by Teasley. The visiting Marlins finished with a slime 35-33 margin on the boards, led by Vaughn with seven. Woodmore led all scoring for Virginia Wesleyan with 17 points, hitting 7-of-13 field goal attempts, including three triples. Teasley added 16 points and Vaughn tallied nine. Ford contributed with five points and a game-high seven assists. Nate Campbell (Cary, N.C./Cary) led Lynchburg with 17 points and eight rebounds. Chillemi was the only other Hornet in double figures with 16 points. Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Wednesday, Jan. 5, hosting Hampden-Sydney College in an ODAC contest beginning at 7 p.m. at the Jane P. Batten Student Center. It is the first of three straight at home for the Marlins, who also host Washington & Lee University on Saturday, Jan. 8 at 2 p.m., and Randolph College on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m. --AMDG--
